“Only up from here” – Gina Carano posts uplifting message as training partner Lucas Brennan loses on UFC debut

by Ohio Digital News

Gina Carano might not be fighting until May but she had an eye on the latest UFC event. The 44-year-old returns to action after a 17-year hiatus and takes on Ronda Rousey on Netflix’s first MMA card.

While ring rust will be a huge factor for both Rousey and Carano, the pair are training with some big names and rising stars for the clash.

One of Carano’s training partners, Lucas Brennan, made his UFC debut on the most recent card. The 25-year-old came in with an 11-2 record and took on Francis Marshall. However, things didn’t go the way of Brennan, and he lost the fight via unanimous decision.

Carano posted an uplifting message on Instagram for her training partner and told him to keep on pushing despite the setback:

“Love your energy my friend. Tough fight and you have one tough chin. Solid debut against a solid opponent. Only up from here.”

Brennan is one of several fighters that Carano has brought in for her big fight against Rousey. The 25-year-old fought in Bellator and was undefeated in the promotion. His last promotion before signing for the UFC was XKO, where he won both his fights.

Lucas Brennan’s wait for his UFC debut

While Lucas Brennan’s UFC debut didn’t go as planned, he had to wait quite a while before getting the fight.

The 25-year-old took the fight on four days notice. Brennan revealed this and a lot more in an interview with MMA Fighting.

The American added that he had been offered eight fights as a replacement, but this was the first time something went through:

“But since I won in October, I’ve more or less been staying out here and tried to get on every card that’s happened since October. 145 [pounds], 155, I’ve taken a couple of calls on the day of weigh-ins. This is the eighth time that I’ve been called to replace somebody and it’s actually gone through.”

Brennan was offered several fights last year, too, but nothing came to fruition. While he went back home, he decided to return to training in February while also helping out Gina Carano for her fight:

“I went home because I believe the last card was Dec. 10 last year. After that, I went home to Texas. Stayed there until mid-February and I’ve been back out here since February just training. We are working with Gina Carano right now on [the Ronda Rousey fight] so we’re out here training full time, working with her. My brother’s making his pro debut in June. So we’ve got a lot going on.”
