The Johnstown Disaster of 1889 aka the Flood of 1889 occurred in Cambria County Pennsylvania on May 31st when the South Fork Dam failed catastrophically, unleashing the 20 million tons of water behind its walls and wreaking havoc down the Conemaugh River Valley.
Situated between the Little Conemaugh River and Stony Creek Johnstown PA, had the largest loss of American civilian lives in a single day until 9/11.
Famous people from history would be involved in this disaster including Henry Clay Frick and Andrew Carnegie, members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club as well as Clara Barton, who led the American Red Cross in the disaster relief.
