Struggling Mall: River Valley Mall – Lancaster, Ohio

Welcome to the River Valley Mall in Lancaster, Ohio. Opened in 1987 with a Hills, JCPenney, Elder Beerman, and Lazarus. In 1989 Sears and a movie theater was added to the mall. In 1999 Ames bought out the Hills store and rebrand the remaining Hills stores into Ames stores, which ended up closing in 2002. In. 2003 Steve & Barry’s opened up in the former Ames location, however though it closed in 2009 due to bankruptcy. The Lazarus store was converted into Macy’s in 2005 but would close in 2007. In 2010 Dick’s Sporting Goods opened shop in the former Lazarus space. Regal Cinemas closed at the mall in 2014, and in the same year Steve and Barry’s would be demolished for a Cinemark theater. Sears would close in 2017, and in 2018 Elder Beerman closed for good due to bankruptcy. As of 2021 the mall is at 60% occupied so let’s go inside and check it out.
