Ariana Grande, Justin Long Star in Hate That I Made You Love Me Video

by Ohio Digital News

They say you can’t kill a good thing, and that is definitely the case in Ariana Grande’s new video for “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” which co-stars Justin Long.

The Christian Breslauer-directed clip opens on Long’s character filling in a grave, ostensibly burying Grande’s character. But as he drives away from the crime scene, she shows up in the back of his car and then in front of it, causing him to veer off the road. Grande taunts him through the fiery crash, singing, “Yeah, I, I, I hate that I made you love me,” as the car bursts into flames. “Sorry if I made me your type.”

While Long walks away from that accident, Grande continues to haunt him. While tossing old mementos into a fireplace, Long catches on fire in a wild slapstick sequence. He somehow makes it out of that accident alive — albeit a little crispy — and stumbles into a diner where every patron looks like Grande. After being driven totally mad, Long returns to the scene of the crime, descends into the pit he dug, looks up, and sees Grande standing over him with a shovel.

Grande released “Hate That I Made You Love Me” last Friday, marking the first offering from her next album, Petal. The song was produced by Grande’s longtime collaborator Ilya, alongside super producer Max Martin.

Little else is known about Petal, which is set to be released on July 31. Grande co-wrote and executive produced the album with Ilya, and she previously described the record as “a little feral” in an Instagram post. “It’s definitely from a place where I have been maybe too shy or polite to tap into before. This kind of just feels like, fuck it,” she added.

Prior to releasing Petal, Grande will kick off her Eternal Sunshine tour. The run is set to begin June 6 in Oakland and wrap Aug. 5 in Chicago.
