The NFL Draft is often as much about the veteran players moving teams as it is about the collegiate stars finding new homes.
For the New York Giants, this year’s draft cycle is beginning to swirl with speculation regarding a former top-five pick.
Recent reports suggest that the Giants could be open to moving edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, and if Joe Schoen decides to pick up the phone, the Chicago Bears are being named as a primary landing spot.
Why the New York Giants Might Move on From Thibodeaux
Kayvon Thibodeaux arrived in East Rutherford with massive expectations as the No. 5 overall pick in 2022.
While he has shown flashes of brilliance — most notably an 11.5-sack campaign in 2023 — his consistency has been a point of contention among the Big Blue faithful and coaching staff.
According to Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay, the Giants find themselves at a crossroads.
The team recently picked up Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option, which carries a price tag of nearly $15 million.
With fading production over the last two seasons (just eight sacks in 22 games) and the emergence of Brian Burns and Abdul Carter, the Giants may view Thibodeaux as a luxury they can no longer justify — or a valuable trade chip to move up in the draft.
The Chicago Bears’ Interest in Thibodeaux
While the Giants are weighing their future, the Chicago Bears are reportedly looking for a partner to pair with Montez Sweat.
Chicago’s defense under Dennis Allen is hungry for high-upside edge talent, and Thibodeaux fits the physical profile they covet.
For the Bears, taking a “flyer” on a 25-year-old with a double-digit sack season on his resume makes a lot of sense.
Chicago has struggled to find reliable production opposite Sweat, especially with Dayo Odeyingbo recovering from a torn Achilles and Austin Booker still developing.
From the Giants’ perspective, a trade would likely require a significant draft haul.
However, moving Thibodeaux would clear cap space and allow the front office to double down on the Brian Burns era while potentially recouping assets to address other holes on the roster.
Conflict in the Thibodeaux Rumor Mill
It is worth noting that not everyone in the building is ready to say goodbye to No. 5. While ESPN’s Jordan Raanan previously indicated that league sources expect a move, Dan Duggan of The Athletic recently reported that there has been little internal indication that the Giants are actively shopping the linebacker.
As is typical with the New York Giants during draft season, the truth likely lies somewhere in the middle.
If a desperate team like the Bears offers a package that Joe Schoen can’t refuse, the “untouchable” status of any player on a struggling roster quickly disappears.
For now, Giants fans will have to wait and see if Thibodeaux remains a cornerstone of the defense or becomes the latest high-profile departure in a quest to rebuild the roster.
