OpenAI starts rolling out group chats for ChatGPT users globally

by Ohio Digital News

OpenAI began piloting group chats for ChatGPT users last week. The feature was available on web and mobile for logged-in users on ChatGPT’s Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, but only in Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, and South Korea. OpenAI said the rollout would be expanded to more regions based on feedback, which has been positive, and the company announced the rollout of group chats for ChatGPT users globally.

Early feedback from the pilot has been positive, so we’re expanding group chats to all logged-in users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans globally over the coming days. We will continue refining the experience as more people start using it,” said OpenAI in a blog post.

ChatGPT lets you invite up to 20 people to a group chat, and responses in group chats are powered by ChatGPT 5.1 Auto, which chooses the best model to respond with based on the prompt and the models available to the user ChatGPT is responding to.

Moreover, rate limits apply only when ChatGPT responds and not when users are chatting with each other in the group.
