The Yankees bolstered their pitching staff on Tuesday.
Per YES Network’s Jack Curry, the Marlins traded Weathers to the Yankees for outfielders Dillon Lewis and Brendan Jones, plus infielders Dillon Jasso and Juan Matheus.
Weathers is coming off an injury-laden season in which he only made eight major league starts. The 26-year-old pitcher went 2-2 and posted a 3.99 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 12 walks in 38.3 innings.
Weathers spent two-plus seasons with the Marlins after being traded from the Padres in August 2023. Weathers went 7-10 with a 4.57 ERA in 27 appearances.
Weathers’ 2025 salary is $1.35 million, followed by two arbitration seasons. The Yankees have control over Weathers until 2029.
Weathers is the son of David Weathers, who played for the Yankees in 1996 and 1997.
The move to get Weathers is insurance for a rotation that will have multiple guys on the shelf to start the season.
Gerrit Cole is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will be out until at least June 1. Meanwhile, Carlos Rodon is expected to return in late April from elbow surgery, and Clarke Schmidt, who also had Tommy John, will keep him out for at least half of the 2026 season.
Weathers will join a rotation that includes Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, and Will Warren. Ryan Yarbrough is expected to make some starts early on.
According to MLB Pipeline, three of the prospects going to Miami are ranked in the top 30: Jones (15), Lewis (16), and Jasso (23).
Latest Cody Bellinger Update
The Yankees are still trying to re-sign outfielder Cody Bellinger.
The latest report from The New York Post’s Jon Heyman claims the Yankees have tweaked their offer for Bellinger.
The new deal is worth five years and includes an opt-out, a signing bonus, and no deferrals.
Reports from this weekend suggested that the Yankees and Bellinger remained far apart in the contract negotiations. The Yankees do not want to exceed five years, while Bellinger is hoping to secure a contract for seven years.
The Yankees’ reported offer to Bellinger is a five-year deal worth $150 million.
Outside of the Yankees, multiple teams have been linked to Bellinger, including the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Angels.
