Anthony Volpe made the great stop.
The throw was less than ideal.
With the Yankees leading by one in the top of the sixth of ALDS Game 1 at the Stadium, Royals outfielder Tommy Pham hit a hot shot — at 102.5 mph — toward short, which Volpe flagged down adroitly with a beautiful diving stop on his backhand.
But with a runner on first, Volpe appeared to try to gun the throw to second — maybe in hopes of turning a quick twin-killing — but his throw was well off the mark, missing Gleyber Torres’ glove wide to the left.
The throwing error put runners on second and third, and Kansas City immediately cashed in when pinch-hitter Garrett Hampson delivered a two-run single, giving the Royals a 5-4 lead in a back-and-forth game.
This all came after a fifth inning in which Volpe put the Yankees on top with a bases-loaded walk.
