Hezbollah Fires 200 Rockets, Launches 20 Drones in Major Attack on Northern Israel

by Ohio Digital News

In a severe escalation of hostilities, Hezbollah launched a major attack on northern Israel on July 2, 2024, firing 200 rockets and deploying 20 drones. The unprecedented assault marks one of the most significant attacks by the militant group in recent years, prompting a robust response from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The rocket barrage targeted multiple towns and cities in northern Israel, including Kiryat Shmona, Metula, and Nahariya. The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted a majority of the rockets, but some managed to hit open areas and infrastructure, causing damage and several injuries. Emergency services have been dispatched to affected areas to provide assistance and assess the damage.

In addition to the rocket fire, Hezbollah launched 20 drones, some of which were armed with explosives. The IDF reported that it successfully intercepted and destroyed the majority of the drones using advanced air defense systems. “Our forces are fully engaged in responding to this large-scale attack. We are taking all necessary measures to protect our citizens and neutralize the threat,” an IDF spokesperson said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack and vowed a decisive response. “Hezbollah’s massive attack on our northern communities is a blatant act of aggression. Israel will respond with full force to ensure the security of our citizens and restore deterrence. We will hold those responsible accountable,” Netanyahu stated.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized the need for a strong military response to deter further aggression. “Our forces are prepared to take all necessary actions to defend our nation. This attack will not go unanswered. We will continue to target Hezbollah’s infrastructure and capabilities to prevent future threats,” Gallant said.

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was in retaliation for the recent killing of a senior commander by the IDF. “This is our response to the assassination of our brother. The resistance will continue to defend Lebanon and respond to Israeli aggression,” a Hezbollah spokesperson declared.

The international community has expressed alarm over the escalation and called for immediate efforts to de-escalate the situation. The United States condemned Hezbollah’s actions and reiterated its support for Israel’s right to self-defense. “We strongly condemn Hezbollah’s indiscriminate attacks on Israeli civilians. Israel has the right to defend itself, and we call for restraint to prevent further escalation,” a US State Department spokesperson said.

The United Nations urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could lead to a broader conflict. “We are deeply concerned about the rising tensions and the potential for further violence. It is crucial that all parties refrain from actions that could escalate the situation and endanger civilian lives,” said a UN representative.

The European Union also emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts to achieve stability and peace in the region. “We urge all sides to de-escalate and engage in dialogue to resolve their differences peacefully. Continued violence only undermines efforts to secure a lasting peace,” an EU representative stated.

As the situation remains highly volatile, the focus will be on monitoring further developments and preventing additional hostilities. The IDF continues to maintain a high state of alert, prepared to respond to any emerging threats and protect Israeli citizens.
