Nestled along the Black River, you’ll find historic Watertown surrounded by magical castle views, thrilling outdoor adventures, and monumental battlefields, which all make for an unforgettable eclipse getaway. Thompson Park offers up breathtaking vistas overlooking the city from more than 700 feet above and can be discovered on walking trails throughout the park. Take a road trip along the St. Lawrence and make a stop in Ogdensburg, to the world’s largest collection of Frederic Remington art at the Frederic Remington Art Museum, about an hour drive from Watertown. About an hour south will put you at the historic star-shaped Fort Ontario in Oswego which saw the battles from the French and Indian War and War of 1812. In Cape Vincent, take a tour of the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse which houses the only original working Fresnel lens on Lake Ontario. In nearby Sackets Harbor, discover the 70-acre historic site that saw two battles during the War of 1812, the Sackets Harbor Battlefield. A 30-minute drive will land you in the heart of the region, Alexandria Bay, home to Boldt (pictured) and Singer Castles. While you can’t officially visit the castles until early May, you can gaze out at Boldt Castle from across the St. Lawrence River at Scenic View Park. Alongside the beautiful view of the city, this historic park will be hosting an exciting lineup of eclipse-themed events all weekend long, with a grand finale viewing event on April 8. Up in Alexandria Bay, Swan Bay Resort located along the St. Lawrence is opening for a special total solar eclipse viewing event that includes eclipse glasses and activities throughout the park. Coyote Moon Vineyards (pictured) in Clayton will be holding its own eclipse viewing complete with a wine tasting. If unobstructed skies are what you seek, Wellesley Island, Southwick Beach, and Robert G. Wehle State Parks all provide great views within a 30-minute radius.
