Where to Watch the Big Event: 


Score a home run viewing experience from Sahlen Field, home of the Buffalo Bisons baseball team, which will be open to the public for an exciting once-in-a-century event. The Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium at Buffalo State University is holding a watch party on the big day complete with viewing glasses. Buffalo’s Resurgence Brewing is holding an Eclipse Bash viewing party and the release of a limited-time eclipse beer named In the Path of Totality 03:20. For family-friendly eclipse experiences, head to Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora for EAclipse, or the Beaver Meadow Nature Center in North Java. For wide open skies, Fort Niagara State Park and Buffalo Harbor State Park are great options, and trained eclipse professionals will be present at both sites.

Learn about the birthplace of Kodak film created by George Eastman, at the George Eastman Museum. Explore the nearby Canandaigua Wine Trail that runs from nearby Fairport to Canandaigua to Naples. Roc the Eclipse, hosted by the Rochester Museum & Science Center, is solar-central in Rochester, packed with three days of activities ranging from popular electricity theater shows, science on a sphere 3D projection shows, hands-on activities, science experiments, solar telescope viewings, and more. The Genesee Country Village & Museum is hosting the Solar Spectacle, a festival of all-things-Eclipse including special programming, performances, and activities.

Nestled along the Black River, you’ll find historic Watertown surrounded by magical castle views, thrilling outdoor adventures, and monumental battlefields, which all make for an unforgettable eclipse getaway. Thompson Park offers up breathtaking vistas overlooking the city from more than 700 feet above and can be discovered on walking trails throughout the park. Take a road trip along the St. Lawrence and make a stop in Ogdensburg, to the world’s largest collection of Frederic Remington art at the Frederic Remington Art Museum, about an hour drive from Watertown. About an hour south will put you at the historic star-shaped Fort Ontario in Oswego which saw the battles from the French and Indian War and War of 1812. In Cape Vincent, take a tour of the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse which houses the only original working Fresnel lens on Lake Ontario. In nearby Sackets Harbor, discover the 70-acre historic site that saw two battles during the War of 1812, the Sackets Harbor Battlefield. A 30-minute drive will land you in the heart of the region, Alexandria Bay, home to Boldt (pictured) and Singer Castles. While you can’t officially visit the castles until early May, you can gaze out at Boldt Castle from across the St. Lawrence River at Scenic View Park. Turn around, bright eyes, there’s a Total Eclipse of the Park at Watertown’s Thompson Park! Alongside the beautiful view of the city, this historic park will be hosting an exciting lineup of eclipse-themed events all weekend long, with a grand finale viewing event on April 8. Up in Alexandria Bay, Swan Bay Resort located along the St. Lawrence is opening for a special total solar eclipse viewing event that includes eclipse glasses and activities throughout the park. Coyote Moon Vineyards (pictured) in Clayton will be holding its own eclipse viewing complete with a wine tasting. If unobstructed skies are what you seek, Wellesley Island, Southwick Beach, and Robert G. Wehle State Parks all provide great views within a 30-minute radius.

When you book a getaway in Watertown for the eclipse, you’ll get access to the most lodging options for the big day and beyond. The Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn Watertown/Thousand Islands, and the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites are all great options if you’re looking to stay in the city. In Sackets Harbor, the Harbor House Inn is a cozy and romantic boutique hotel option. In Clayton, 1000 Islands River Rat Cheese is a must-stop with a delicious assortment of New York cheeses aged to perfection. The Seaway Grille found at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel serves up fresh, local flavors, and the Wood Boat Brewery has some of the area’s best pizza and brews.

Snug at the crossroads of the Adirondack Park, Tupper Lake prides itself on pristine waters, summit hikes with panoramic views, and endless outdoor-centric facilities. Venture to the Wild Center and Wild Walk, a mesmerizing elevated trail that sweeps you through the treetops, revealing whimsical treasures like a human-sized bird nest and an expansive hammock-like spider web. More than just a cool college town, Plattsburgh is an Adirondack Coast treasure. Soak in sweeping views of Lake Champlain on a stroll along the sandy shores of Plattsburgh City Beach, the second-longest freshwater beach in the U.S., or immerse yourself in nature within Point Au Roche State Park’s diverse landscape of forest, marsh, and shoreline (pictured). The arts are alive at the Plattsburgh State Art Museum, home to more than 10,000 works of art and artifacts, and the Strand Theatre, which has teamed up with SUNY Plattsburgh on a special exhibition celebrating the eclipse.
