From the iconic cronut to cereal milk soft serve, NYC has no shortage of innovative, drool-worthy desserts. But sometimes, actually, a lot of the time, we find ourselves craving a simple, freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. And in NYC, they come in all different forms – thin, thick, chewy, crispy, gooey, but all definitely full of chocolatey goodness. Keep reading for our top ten list of the absolute best chocolate chip cookies in the city.

No cookie list could be complete without Levain bakery, so let’s get right to business. At first with just one location on the Upper West Side, their popularity led BFF duo Pam and Connie to open bakeries across the city. This chocolate chip walnut cookie is gigantic, each one weighing in at a whopping six ounces. They are dense and crispy on the outside, totally gooey on the inside and filled with semisweet chocolate and chunks of walnuts throughout. For those with a nut allergy, they now make a walnut-free version, and for those extra chocolate obsessed, they make one with dark chocolate dough.

Chip is giving Levain a run for their money, as they also have expanded from one shop in Astoria to 14 locations, and bake huge cookies with a crispy exterior and soft inside. Their flavors rotate regularly, but they almost always have their classic chocolate chip on the menu, which is a brown sugar cookie with dark chocolate chips. They also sometimes offer their plant based flavor, using coconut oil and oat milk instead of butter and eggs.

We first tried L’appartement 4F in 2020, back when they were baking just a few items out of their Cobble Hill Apartment, and we always knew these guys were doing something special. Today, you may think of this hot spot for their incredible croissants, but we’re here to assure you that their chocolate chip cookie is one of the very best we’ve ever had.

The cookies at Seven Grams Caffe are famous for a reason, with a crunchy exterior, chewy interior, and several incredible options to choose from. There’s the classic version, the vegan version, and the gluten free version, so everyone can enjoy the deliciousness. The dietary swaps, like tahini for eggs and olive oil for butter, make them just as good as the OG.

Frenchette’s chocolate chip cookie is made with the finest ingredients and baked to perfection, with golden crispy exterior. It’s worth noting that this cookie is made with buckwheat flour, giving it an earthy, nutty flavor that we can’t get enough of. It’s also topped with flakey sea salt, which enhances the buckwheat flavor and compliments the chocolate so well.

They always serve their cookies warm, since they are constantly churning out more batches. These babies are nice and crispy on the outside and completely overloaded with chocolate. Maman is a French cafe and restaurant that quickly became famous for their amazing chocolate chip cookies, with browned crispy edges and a softer center. Make sure to order it warmed up, so the imported dark chocolate morsels melt.

Librae’s chocolate chip cookie is a great example of the bakery’s utilization of Middle Eastern flavors with modern techniques. The cookie is baked with tahini, rendering a slight touch nuttiness that compliments the sweetness of the chocolate chips just perfectly.
